Service/Maintenance/Parts:

  • 24,855.0 miles on 11/8/2023 : Shimano Ultegra Di2 12-speed upgrade performed by Zubbi over at Swanny’s. Decided to also move my Favero Assimo Uno from Ares onto Shadow despite having the Stages. Personally I couldn’t handle the left side crank arm being a different style than the left. I also kept the Shimano Dura-Ace discs versus the Ultegra. What can I say they just look better, especially with the black details.
    • Retired parts:
      • Shifters: Shimano Ultegra R8020, 11-speed
      • Front derailleur: Shimano Ultegra R8000, braze-on
      • Rear derailleur: Shimano Ultegra R8000, long cage, 34T max cog
      • Crank: Shimano Ultegra R8000, 50/34 (compact), 170.0mm length
      • Cassette: Shimano Ultegra HG800-11, 11-34, 11 speed
      • Chain: Shimano XTR/Dura-Ace CN-HG901, 11-Speed
      • Pedals: Look KeO Classic 3 Pedals
      • Stages Shimano Ultegra R8000 Power Meter – 170mm (Gen. 3)
  • 24,073.0 miles on 10/13/2023 : Visited BikeBody Balance (formerly Sanus Sports) and replaced the SQLab 612 Ergowave Active S-Tube Saddle, 14cm with a new Selle Italia SLR Boost Endurance TI 316 Superflow, L3.  Also replaced the old Shimano SH-RC701 shoes with a new pair of Lake CX 238.  The shoes had at least 24K miles on them, and the saddle had 20412.5 miles on it.  Performed backyard maintenance.  I swapped in a freshly waxed chain.  I cleaned and waxed the old chain to be ready for the next swap.
  • 18,720.1 miles on 4/29/2023 : Into Swanny’s for a lube and tune in preparation for this year’s Pacific Coast Bike Tour attempt. I took in the new touring wheel set to have brake discs, rear cassette, and rear hub ratchet upgrade kit installed. The touring set is what will stay on the bike until I leave for Vancouver in June. I also had new brake discs, rear cassette, and rear hub ratchet upgrade kit installed on the Bontrager Aeolus Pros. Those will hang in the garage until I get back from my tour. I also had a new chain and bar tape installed. Asked to have the old discs measured and they were near end of life. 10,522.7 miles on the set. I didn’t check the chain for wear and opted to replace it out of an abundance of caution. 8,483.6 miles on this chain.
  • 18,533.4 miles on 4/24/2023 : Rear tire split at the bead and irreparable. Went to Swanny’s for a replacement and they only had “Black Edition” Gatorskins in stock. Bit the bullet and bought two tires so they match. I’ll hang on to the spare for use in a pinch. 5,053.2 miles on the rear before failure.
  • 13,480.2 miles on 10/30/2022 : I replaced the 700cx32 tires for 700cx28. At Trek Henderson they measured the 32s while installed on the new carbon fiber wheels and they expanded to nearly 40cm. The Aeolus Pros I purchased are made for 28 so it only made sense to size down. I enjoy the look much more and they don’t feel any different than the 32s. I’m keeping the set of 32s for future use on my second Pacific Coast Bike Tour attempt. Only 3,243.7 miles on the pair.
  • 13,264.7 miles on 10/24/2022 : I was loading Shadow onto the Thule to come home from a weekend in Southern California, when I happened to look down at the rear wheel where he was strapped down and saw a crack in the wheel spreading out from one of the nipples. No idea when it started or how it happened. I bit the bullet and pulled the trigger on a new set of carbon fiber wheels. I am keeping the original front. I may use it next year in my second Pacific Coast Bike Tour attempt.
  • 12,400.9 miles on 9/22/2022 : Replaced brakes pads. Rear pads worn to near zero. Return spring would rub and bind on rear disc. Front pads near 40% remaining. 4,570.5 miles logged on the set.
  • 10,435.7 miles on 4/23/2022 : Rear derailleur cable broke five miles into Tour de Summerlin. Had Swanny’s replace both front and rear cables. 7,045.2 miles logged on the pair.
  • 10,236.5 miles on 4/3/2022 : Taken into Swanny’s for a lube and tune. Partially because of the mileage, and also to make sure everything checked out for May’s tour. Installed two new Gatorskins for the tour.
  • 8,197.4 miles on 1/26/2022 : Replaced brake discs. 8,197.4 miles logged on the set.
  • 7,830.4 miles on 1/9/2022 : Replaced brake pads. 5,231.5 miles logged on the set.
  • 5,788.7 miles on 9/10/2021 : Replaced rear tire with a new one. The tire had a small hole in the sidewall that had an interior support patch, but it had started expanding recently. Felt it was best to swap it out to be safe.
  • 4,515.5 miles on 7/18/2021 : Swanny’s tune up. Lubed and tightened everything. Was having problems with head tube ISOSpeed decoupler loosening up again. Seems like this is going to be an every 2,000-2,500 mile thing. Swapped out the chain after 4,515.5 miles.
  • 4,399.2 miles on 7/13/2021 : Replaced both Bontrager R2 Hard-Case Lite, aramid bead, 60 tpi, 700x32c tires. Arrived home on 7/12/2021 and rear tire burst. 4,399.2 miles logged on the pair. Added a pair of Continental Gatorskins on loan from Swanny’s.
  • 3,660.5 miles on 7/7/2021 : Replaced SQLab 612 Ergowave Active S-Tube Saddle, 14cm. Both tubes snapped. 3,049.23 logged on the saddle.
  • 3,390.5 miles on 5/25/2021 : Swanny’s Cycles replaced right shifter under warranty.
  • 2,598.9 miles on 4/18/2021 : Replaced brake pads. 2,598.9 miles logged on the pair.
  • 2,497.3 miles on 3/30/2021 : Replaced Bontrager Supertack Perf tape
  • 2,497.3 miles on 3/30/2021 : McGhie’s Red Rock Package.
  • 611.27 miles on 11/12/2021 : Replaced Bontrager Arvada Comp, steel rails, 138mm width saddle.
  • Parts replaced immediately:
    • Shimano Ultegra R8000, 50/34 (compact), 172.5mm length
    • Bontrager Elite IsoZone VR-CF, alloy, 31.8mm, internal Di2 routing, 93mm reach, 123mm drop, 42cm width
