The weekly Adobo Velo ride got pushed to Sunday, June 9th to support a joint ride with GVC. It was also going to be a taco and 50/50 raffle ride to boot! Unfortunately, I’d already planned on leaving town Sunday morning with Caleb Sprayberry as a member of his Race Across the West crew. Of course this meant I couldn’t join in on the group festivities. Not to be deterred I chose to post up a ride anyway because I wanted to get more riding in before taking a week off.
I’d also been talking with Caleb about what ride he would like to do before leaving town and opted for something that started on the west side. I also reached out to Joy to see if she was up for joining me early to ride over to the start at Pedal & Pour. Of course she was interested and I left the house just before five to go meet up with her before riding over. Mark Hyken had also reached out and agreed to meet Joy and I near Via Firenze and Democracy. We all arrived on time and rode out.
The ride to the start went pretty well and the pace was decent. We weren’t crushing it by any scope of the imagination, but we weren’t taking our sweet time either. With Fort Apache closed, or so I thought, I decided to route us north on Durango versus working our way over to Fort Apache. I was actually pretty thrilled with the change. The road surface was really nice and there wasn’t much traffic out at that hour. We made decent time and arrived at Pedal & Pour with time to spare.
I was pleasantly surprised how many people showed up. I hadn’t expected so many, instead expecting more folks to prefer to do the big Sunday ride instead. All in all I think we had a group of ten or so riders. I was bummed when Mark came over and told me that he enjoyed the ride over, but was heading home instead of continuing on.
With the gang all present and accounted for we set off.
In all honesty at this point I’m returning to write this now two months removed from this ride. What I do remember is leading out the group for the most part and putting in a solid effort to climb Villa Ridge. Eventually on the way back with Joy after a nice stop at Pedal & Pour I started to fall apart. Derrick had joined us for a time and he was a welcome wheel to follow, but he peeled off around Rainbow leaving Joy and I to ride the rest of the way home.
I really wanted to get a century out of the day but it wasn’t meant to be as I felt worse and worse as we got closer to home. Eventually Joy peeled off to go it alone to get a century in and I went straight home. I did end up stopping about half-way up Democracy for a quick break before continuing up the rest of the way. Made it home and proceeded to plop down and relax for the rest of the afternoon.
