Project Hero Honor Ride 2024 w/ Extra Credit

I absolutely love this annual event. It is one of the only times I know of, outside a global pandemic, where you can ride down the Las Vegas Strip unmolested by traffic. I’ve told countless Adobo Velo members from Southern California if they can only come to one event in Las Vegas all year to make it this one. It’s been a while since this ride took place and the details are a little foggy now.

I do know I met up with Joy to ride to the start and we took a slightly different route than in previous years mainly so I could log some Wandrer miles. A highlight of the pre-ride was riding the entirety of Essex Circle. We were making jokes about coming back sometime and logging a century just around this loop. It made me feel like an absolute child. Then as we made the right onto Alta from Essex East Drive we came out right in front of a large group of cyclists riding to the start from, I assume, Summerlin. The timing couldn’t have been more on point and the hilarity sent me right over the edge. I was crying from laughing and giggling so much.

The ride itself went rather well. I got separated from Joy and a few others right from the start. I did find a nice solid group to ride with and had a great time. I made it back and hooked up with Joy and the rest of the gang. We all hung out while enjoying In-N-Out! One of the greatest complaints from attendees riding this event in the past was the lack of food for those who do the longer course. That certainly wasn’t an issue this time around. I hope they repeat this treatment next year.

Post-ride saw Joy and I b line it due east to get out of downtown. Westerman had mentioned Washington as a solid east-west route and I had decided to use it when mapping the day’s route. We went as far as Christy Lane before turning south to pick me up some additional Wandrer miles. I’d say the ride home was much improved over last year’s more direct route down Pecos. It even included a massive haul for the New Bike Fund which mostly came from a huge drop of pennies at the corner of Desert Shadow Trail and Paseo Verde!

A great day out on the bike enjoying beautiful fall weather. Looking forward to doing this one again next year.
