120 planned but cut short due to a sick employee. Off to work I go!
A great little Adobo Velo monthly birthday spin from PTs at Green Valley Pkwy and Horizon Ridge out to Lake Las Vegas and back. I was feeling pretty good for the entire ride which was nice. The winds out of the south made things along Racetrack and the RMT a little gnarly. Not much you can do about it other than ride on.
There was a funny coincidence though today. We stopped just after making the turn onto Lake Las Vegas Pkwy near the first pond like we usually do for a regroup. While we were hanging out waiting for everyone to catch up, we looked over and spotted a sign warning people to not feed the coyotes. As Jason rolled up, with his dog Dallas on his back, we joked with him that he’d better be careful! Then as we climbed up Highland Shores Dr at the north end of Lake Las Vegas be damned we spotted a coyote just strolling along. Several of us stopped to get in a good look and the coyote just sat there without a care in the world.
The ride wasn’t without mechanicals however. After climbing Green Valley Pkwy, Joy and I, along with a few others, were waiting for the light to turn green. When it did, Joy went to pedal, we heard a loud snap, and then she went down. She popped right up and tried to get back on but she couldn’t pedal! We got her off the bike and moved over to the sidewalk to figure out what was going on. At first we thought she’d dropped a chain, but we checked and it looked fine. We tried to rotate the pedals and the rear hub refused to engage. The two of us walked it over to Giant and they couldn’t figure it out beyond saying the hub was probably toast. Unfortunately, her ride was over as we walked over to PTs to hang out for brunch with the gang.
I had a great time eating and visiting with everyone, but it was soon time to go. I made sure to see Joy off with her husband before leaving myself. Just as I set off to go I happened to check my phone and I spotted an email from one of my student employees asking for someone to cover their shift. Knowing they weren’t going to find anyone I knew I’d be going in. After a couple phone calls I rode straight home to get ready for a short shift in one of my labs. My planned 120 mile day cut short.
Overall a great day for a ride despite the wind and mechanicals. Had a great time and looking forward to the next one.
