Live action!

For the past couple days the weatherman has been talking about a change in the weather for the worst starting on Monday. Late last night I pulled up weather.com to see when it was supposed to hit. A wind advisory would start at 10:00 a.m. with the winds really picking up closer to noon and the rain wouldn’t begin until late afternoon or perhaps even early evening. With that knowledge I hit up Moose and Joy to see if they were interested in a short ride down to the quarry and back. Both agreed, and I would meet Joy at our usual corner at 6:40 a.m. and Moose near Speed Vegas around 7:00 a.m.

The ride down was uneventful other than the brief tiff mom and dad got into on the most efficient running order. I can only guess that Joy was doing Joy things being attached to my wheel, and when Moose rotated off for the first time I could hear the two of them exchanging words. I’m not entirely sure what was said but I do remember hearing Joy retort, “I’m just riding my bike.”

With that in mind, the next time Moose rotated off I pointed to his wheel so Joy would fall in behind him instead of sticking with me. Then I hear Moose from behind, “Oh so this is what it feels like to have a draft.”

I was telling the wife about this and said the two of them are like The Odd Couple. The two of them bicker like they’re married, and I’m the kid who’s stuck in the middle just wanting everyone to get along!

Along the way back things went the same as the ride out. Moose and I taking turns out front while Joy brought up the rear. Around the new warehouses we spotted another cyclist heading south. Of course I gave him a hoot and a holler and we continued on.

The three of us were quite surprised when Burak Coskun rolled up to us at Volunteer. He’d roll with us all the way to the Bicentennial Starbucks that Joy and I frequent at the end of a ride. Another surprise was that Moose decided to join us as well. We learned that he hails from Dubai and is staying at the Wynn while in town for an internal sales conference with Crowdstrike. He’ll be staying throughout the week and he was hoping to get in a few more rides this week before the conference starts. It was cool to have a little chat and share some coffee, but he set his sights north to head back to the hotel while the three of us rode off south.

Another surprise came when Joy and Moose decided to join me up Democracy. I know Joy was itching for more elevation, and I’m not entirely sure what Moose’s motivation was. Regardless, it was nice to have an escort all the way to the front door. Looking at their rides on Strava, I’m a little envious because they both got more miles! Buggers!

Anyway, a nice “short” ride this morning. I think we really timed the weather almost perfectly. As we were sitting outside Starbucks we all noticed the winds were starting to pick up. We could have started maybe an hour later and had a wonderful tailwind on the return, but we also wouldn’t have done the extra Starr/Raiders Way/Via Inspirada loop either.
