Well after 18K miles of commuting it finally happened. Fell victim to a right hook at the intersection of LVB and Wigwam.
I was cruising about 20 MPH up to a red light and it went green before I got to it. I saw the white Audi start to roll forward but they had no indicator flashing. My bad for assuming they would have it on before making a right turn. Thankfully I saw them start to turn into me so instead of a straight on hit it became more glancing. Unfortunately I still went down.
Thankfully the driver stopped to check on me, and after I got their information I told them I was okay and they should go ahead and leave. After fixing a dropped chain and adjusting the hood covers, I gathered everything up, as best I could, and finished the ride to campus. My apologies for those who had to see me with almost half my backside hanging out. Another pair of bibs done and dusted.
Once at the office I got a chance to really survey the damage. I reopened up the wounds from going down a few weeks ago on a Lifetime ride. Really frustrating considering they were nearly fully healed. I did pick up some fresh wounds on my left and road rash on my back side.
Surprisingly Shadow seems to have come out unscathed. Other than the dropped chain and hood covers, the only damage I can find is a piece of metal missing from the top of the left pedal. It almost seems like more a cosmetic thing than anything else, but I did notice clipping out was a little tougher on that side. Perhaps a solid excuse for a new pair of pedals?! 😀
My Rapha backpack is done. It has some road rash of its own, but a broken clasp on the right strap makes the entire thing worthless. Inside the pack though, both of the cases for my glasses are toast. Thankfully my prescription pair escaped any damage, but my sunglasses have a decent scratch on the right lens and will need replacing. I’m not sure if they were run over or crushed under my body weight.
All in all I’m not too much worse for wear. I’m relieved that things turned out as good as they did. I’m okay and, most importantly, so is Shadow. Hell I’d be riding home tonight if my bibs weren’t completely trashed.
