Review: Ranger Confidential: Living, Working, and Dying in the National Parks

Ranger Confidential: Living, Working, and Dying in the National Parks
Ranger Confidential: Living, Working, and Dying in the National Parks by Andrea Lankford

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Just finished up Andrea Lankford’s book Ranger Confidential. After having spent so much time this summer in out National Parks I thought it would be interesting to read about an insider’s view of the parks. I wasn’t disappointed.

Lankford has done an amazing job at telling and retelling several stories from her and her coworker’s days at Yosemite and Grand Canyon National Parks. To hear some of these stories from a ranger’s point-of-view is frustrating and amazing at the same time. Amazing to hear how touched these park employees are by their surroundings, and just how bad Joe Public can be in America’s beautiful park.

If you want to get a taste of behind the scenes at two of our most popular National Parks then definitely pick this book up and give it a read. Hopefully it will give you, like it did me, a new understanding of the hard work NPS rangers put in daily to keep our parks open and available for all.
