Morning Commute – 2020.10.05

Almost got out the arm warmers, but decided against it and I’m glad I did.

Installed some new tires on the commuter yesterday afternoon. Off went the Bontrager H2 Hard Case tires. I’ve had them as long as I can remember, and have logged at least 3,000 miles on them. Honestly, if it weren’t for the larger cracks and holes in them they would be good for another 500-1,000.

In their place went on Bontrager H2 Hard-Case Ultimate Reflective Hybrid tires. These chunky bastards are easily 300 grams heavier (each) than the previous tires, and you can feel it. The bike doesn’t feel as nimble. Once you get all that mass rotating it doesn’t like to change direction. As I told my wife, “I can either add weight or I can add flats, which do you think I prefer?” I also aired them down from the previous set (60 -> 45) based on an app recommendation. Overall, I’m satisfied with them based on just this one ride, and we’ll see how they pan out over their lifetime.

With the additional weight, my overall time wasn’t all that bad considering I wasn’t trying for any personal best time. Still wanting to keep it chill to allow the legs to recuperate.
