Commute Loop – 2026.02.11

It’s kinda crazy how warm it was this morning. I guess the cloud cover kept in the heat from yesterday. I very nearly could have done both the in- and out- ride in full summer kit.

The ride home felt significantly longer than usual without the Moose escort. Guess I’ve become spoiled by having him along on Wednesday nights.

Funny story time.

On Monday while riding in with Moose, we had just crossed University Center while traveling east on Harmon. Somewhere along the way I spotted a dime and called out, “Hey more bike money!”. Since Moose was behind me I decided I’d let it go and if I was lucky I’d pick it up on Wednesday.

Fast forward to this morning and I remember that I want to grab that dime if it’s still there. As I’m riding near the same spot I’m keeping an eye out, but fully expecting it to have been picked up already. Imagine my surprise when lo and behold I spotted it. After a shoulder check and allowing a pair of cars to pass I was able to flip around to go back for it. While doubling back I had to wait for a couple more cars before flipping around to track it down again. This is all pretty standard procedure. I over shoot a coin, double back to find it, over shoot it again, and finally double back and scoop it up.

As I’m approaching the spot where the dime lay, a student is coming from the left/north crossing Harmon. I’m soft pedaling at this point to let him cross and be damned he bent down and scooped up my New Bike Money! Now he’d seen me go by heading east, go back past him going west, and now again going east. So I called out very lightheartedly, “Hey man I was just going to get that!”

Through a large smile he says, “Oh yeah?”

To which I replied while I rode off, “Yeah man it’s New Bike Money!”

I’m not entirely sure why but I found the whole interaction hilarious. I laugh about it for the rest of my ride along Harmon, and I’m chuckling now recounting the story.
