Population: 485: Meeting Your Neighbors One Siren at a Time by Michael Perry
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Finished up Michael Perry’s Population 485 a few days ago while camping with my daughter over Spring Break. I must say that I’m pretty happy with the book overall. Having read some other reviews complaining how Perry meanders I would tend to agree, but I believe it is more a part of his writing style. Furthermore, I think it you try to take a higher or larger look at each chapter/section of the book everything flows together more thematically.
Looking through Perry’s bibliography, I’m not surprised to see that this was his first published work. I will say that it appears, on the surface, to be a great start. The edition I own has a short preview of some of Perry’s other works and I’m definitely adding them to my wish list.
Overall, I would say if you’re interested in one man’s reasoning and journey at returning to the small town he grew up in then by all means picks up this book. At the same time I would say pigeon holing the entire book to just that single sentence premise isn’t quite fair. It is more than just that, but don’t go in expecting world rendering insight and hard core thought provoking philosophy.
